PONDA WAKES UP TO GRUESOME DOUBLE MURDER

Two sisters 68-year-old Jeevan Kamat, a retired nurse of GMC and 76-year-old Mangala Kamat found lying in a pool of blood with multiple injuries in their flat; Police seize chopper found at crime spot; Yet to ascertain the motive behind the double murder as no valuables and cash were stolen

PONDA: Ponda residents on Saturday woke up to the gruesome double murder of two sisters, who were found lying in a pool of blood in their flat, located in heart of the town.

The bodies of 68-year-old Jeevan Kamat, a retired nurse of the Goa Medical College (GMC) and her sister 76-year-old Mangala Kamat were found in the kitchen with multiple injuries.

Ponda Police suspect that accused may have attacked them with blunt object on their head and later with a chopper. However, the police are yet to ascertain the motive behind the double murder as no valuables and cash were stolen. The police suspect that the crime may have occurred between 10 am and 12 pm. 

Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Singh inspected the crime scene. The Police also checked the CCTV footages of surrounding areas.

Ponda PI Mohan Gaude said both sisters were found murdered at their residence and the police seized the chopper found at crime spot. 

Top police officials said the accused was known to the victims and hence they opened the door and allowed him to enter the flat. 

The police suspect that the accused may have hit them with blunt object on their head and later attacked with chopper. 

According to locals, they heard some pet dogs barking as usual at around 10.15 am may be from same flat. 

The residency is three-storey structure in the heart of Ponda. 

Gokuldas Kamat, the younger sibling of the two victims, who resides at Dhavlim, on receiving the shocking news, rushed to Ponda. 

He said his sisters, who enjoyed cordial relations, were living together in their flat for around two decades.  

Mangala leaves behind two sons as one resides on second floor of same building along with his wife and daughter. 

Mangala’s son Pritesh, had gone to his uncle`s residence in Dhavlim and on his return was shocked to receive the news that his mother and aunt were brutally murdered. 

The team of police officials were at the crime spot till late night. 

The police said they are investigating the matter, the dog squad and forensic team was pressed into service. 

The dog went about sniffing around 200 metres from crime spot and returned. 

The police are hunting for leads to lay their hands on the accused. 

The police conducted panchanama and sent bodies to GMC. Post-mortem reports are awaited.
