PANJIM: A portion of a Portuguese-era building, located on the M G Road near the Chapel of Our lady of Immaculate Conception in the capital city collapsed on Wednesday owing to incessant rains. No casualty was reported but the traffic was disrupted until late evening.

The one-storey dilapidated building was later completely demolished by the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) to avoid further danger to nearby structures, vehicles and people.
Fire personnel told Herald that the control room received a call around 1:30pm about the incident. While the team rushed to the spot, a team of CCP personnel were also at the spot to clear the debris.
“Two JCB machines were used to clear the debris and around 6-7 trucks to transport the remains to dump at an alternate location. Since the remaining structure, being unstable, posed a risk to the people and other nearby structures, the CCP began demolishing it,” the official said as the process of demolishing the building and clearing of the debris was underway. An old carpenter’s shop suffered damages due to the collapse.
Last year in the same month, iconic Prakash Lodge, another Portuguese-era building collapsed due to heavy rains.
