Porvorim locals angry at reckless road digging

PORVORIM: The newly tarred internal roads in Porvorim have been subjected to mindless digging by a private company for laying cables, which has created resentment among the residents. What has irked them is that even after completing the job, the roads are never restored to their original position.

Executive Engineer of Public Works Department, B Naik, when contacted, stated that roads have been dug by Reliance Company for laying their internet cables and PWD has given them no objection certificate for this work till May end. Reliance has deposited money with PWD and once their work is completed, PWD will undertake the work of tarring the roads, Naik said.
Annoyed by unabated and arbitrary digging and haphazard cutting of newly tarred roads across Porvorim, local MLA Rohan Khaunte stated that to get the roads tarred he has to go through a lengthy process, while PWD in no time issues permission for digging and cutting of new roads. This is utter nonsense, he said. If any resident wants to take a water connection he has to wait for more than a month for the permission of digging the road from PWD, if the water pipeline is across the road.
Since most of the internal roads have been dug up, Porvorim wore a shabby look and if these trenches are not filled and roads are not tarred before the onset of monsoon, then there is a possibility of flooding in Porvorim.
Further, when the roads are dug up there is no presence of PWD officials at the spot to ensure that water pipeline or telephone cables are not damaged. Khaunte said he has received complaints from some residents that in their areas water pipeline has been damaged due to which they could not get water supply. The government should act wisely and ensure that no inconvenience is caused to the residents, a visibly angry Khaunte stated.
