Post scrutiny, 451 in fray for polls to 5 councils

PANJIM: After scrutiny, 451 candidates are in the fray in five municipal councils for the upcoming April 23 polls. Withdrawal of nominations, if any, will take place on Saturday.

Three nominations – two in Mapusa of Samrudhi Vaigankar (Ward 17) and Francisco Carvalho (Ward 7) and one in Sanguem of Poornima Panchwadkar from ward 3 – were rejected by the election authority. 

Mormugao Municipal Council, with 25 wards has the maximum number of 136 candidates in the fray, while Margao, with equal number of wards, has 115 aspirants. 

The 20 wards of Mapusa Municipal Council have got 95 candidates, while in Quepem 62 candidates will fight it out in 13 wards. Sanguem, with 10 wards has 43 candidates. 

Wards 17 and 12 of Mormugao Municipal Council and Ward 11 of Mapusa Municipal Council have got a maximum of eleven candidates each. Margao’s Ward 24 has ten candidates in the ring. There is no straight fight in any ward.

For the by-elections to the Ward II of Karapur-Sarvan village panchayat in Bicholim taluka, five nominations were declared valid while ward IV of Veim village panchatyat in Salcete taluka has four candidates in the fray.
