MAINA: Every year on August 20, the agrarian village of Maina in Salcete celebrates the unique ‘Khandi Khuris’ feast, a festival of the miraculous cross with religious fervor and gaiety. On Wednesday, there were serpentine queues of nearly a kilometre long, stretching past the bundh near Maina Church, as hundreds of devotees participated in the celebrations. The music from Brass bands filled the air, and the smell of delicious traditional snacks added to the festive revelry. As per tradition, the Parish priest Fr Domnic Savio Vaz blessed the work on the sluice gates of the village, known for its paddy fields. People from across Goa visited the miraculous cross with offerings of flowers and candles. The farmers also offered tributes at the cross and marked coconut palms while praying for a bountiful harvest.
