Property under Tenancy Act can’t be sold, says Agri Min

Laments commercial sale of land, says hardly any land will be left for agriculture in State in the future

MARGAO: Agriculture Minister Ravi Naik lamented the fact that there is too much commercial sale of land in Goa and once such multi-storey buildings or second homes are built here, there will hardly be any land left for agriculture in the State. Naik also emphasized that property that falls under the purview of the Tenancy Act cannot be sold.

Naik was speaking to media persons in Margao on how  farmers need to be encouraged so that the agricultural produce increases and the State becomes self reliant.

The minister added that the file he had sent to the Chief Minister’s office for starting a Coconut Corporation had already been forwarded to the concerned department and the main aim would be to offer support price to coconut farmers. Cashew farmers too have been kept in mind by the department, said Naik.

The Minister added that he had also brought the issue of irregularities taking place in mundkarial and tenanted  lands to the notice of Revenue Minister Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate and emphasized that property that falls under the purview of the Tenancy Act cannot be sold and added that it is the responsibility of the Mamlatdar concerned to take action against illegalities that occur in such lands.

Naik stated that Mundkars have been allowed to make  payments in instalments and added that they will be provided with electricity and water connections too.
