PONDA: Expressing concern over the global heatwave, NGOs from Ponda on the occasion of World Environment Day, called for protecting Goa’s green cover.
Sathak Foundation, an NGO from Ponda in collaboration with the Forest Department, various organisations and students, celebrated the World Environment Day by planting 300 seedlings of fruit-bearing and other trees at Bythokhol-Borim, on Wednesday.

The members emphasised the need to plant more trees across Goa, to combat global warming and rising temperatures.
Forest officials and members of Rotary Club Margao, JCI Margao, JCI Ponda, JCI Farmagudi, Fatima High School- Curti, Vidyavrudi School-Ponda, and Vivekanand Higher Secondary- Borim participated in the event.
Sarthak Foundation chief Suresh Narvekar said that for the past seven years they have been organising the event.
He said earlier 100 trees were planted at Ponda Sports Complex and 92 of them have grown up and some have borne fruits.
He said planting seedlings is not enough, taking care is also important. Forest officials Deepak Tandel and his team of officials and staff were present.
To address global warming, Mayur Sagoji, who is connected with waste management of Hildari Project of Ponda Municipal Council, said, “The municipality workers had prepared 2000 seedballs which will be spread in barren and forest areas in Ponda taluka to increase green cover.”
