PANJIM:
A public meeting will be held on January 9 to mark the first anniversary of the alleged custodial death of NRI seafarer Cipriano Fernandes at Azad Maidan, Panjim.
Various like-minded people are expected to participate in the meeting which will be followed by a candle light vigil in the evening.
Cipriano, 38, was on a two-month long vacation at his home town in Goa, when he was picked by the Panjim police on January 7, 2011 evening. He was arrested under ‘preventive measure’ after Georgina Nunes complained against him alleging that he had threatened her with a knife at her Caranzalem house.
He succumbed in the GMC on January 9, which the family members claim was due to police torture.
The Crime Branch registered a murder case but did not make any progress. The case is now being investigated by the CBI. Three police officials are suspended.
