MARGAO: Two nuns employed as nurses by the Directorate of Health Services and working at Hospicio, accompanied by former MLA Farrel Furtado, had a private tete-a-tete with Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardessai on the dilapidated state of their quarters.
The nuns belonging to the Sisters of Charity disclosed that they are presently occupying only one of the two rooms that were allotted to them as one room cannot be occupied and added that there are three sisters sharing the room.
“As two of us are working as nurses whenever we are both on night shift we have to ask sisters from our other house at Cuncolim to give company to the lone sister living in the quarters,” they disclosed adding that wild cats and even reptiles are found crawling on the roof of the quarters.
The congregation has worked at Hospicio for the last 83 years and at present there are only three nuns as earlier there were 12 working there.
The nuns pointed out that house rent is deducted from their salaries and argued that after having worked for so long, they are entitled to have quarters allotted to them and lamented that there is no provision made for them in the new district hospital that is under construction at Ambaji.
“As the new building is presently abandoned we face a lot of problems with even hooligans from Moti Dongor coming and banging our windows and even pelting stones at the windows,” complained one of the nuns.
At Vijai’s instance tenders were invited to repair as nobody bid for it, the work was not taken up. Vijai has now promised to work out some solution to their problem.
