PONDA: The Ponda unit of the BJP has advised local MLA Lavoo Mamlatdar to quit the alliance and resign from the chairmanship of Rajiv Kala Mandir and Horticulture Department, if he was not happy with the government.
The outburst comes in the wake of the burning of the effigy of South Goa MP Narendra Savoikar over the Medium of Instruction (MoI) issue by the supporters of Mamlatdar.
Addressing the media, BJP office bearers Shantaram Colvekar, Vishwanath Dalvi and Sunil Desai accused Mamlatdar of indulging in anti-government activities.
Though Mamlatdar is a partner in the ruling coalition, he behaves like an opposition member disowning decisions of the government, Colvekar said and emphasised that the MGP is bound by the decisions of the government on MoI policy.
“Instead of supporting the government on the MoI issue, he is encouraging is party supporters to burn the effigy of Savoikar. We condemn his act and demand his resignation for the same,” Colvekar said.
Labelling Mamlatdar as a non-performer, Colvekar blamed the local MLA for halting developments in Ponda. He also lashed out at Mamlatdar for interfering in sopo matters, due to which, he said, the Ponda municipality has failed to recover huge revenue from the market vendors.
For his part, Desai accused Mamlatdar of not following up on works after launching the same in his constituency.
“Lavoo lacks the ability to follow up the work till its completion. Instead of admitting his failures, he blames BJP for non-completion of projects including Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir,” Desai said.
“Notwithstanding his failures, Mamlatdar criticises the government. If he wants to do so, he must first quit the coalition and resign from government posts,” Desai added.
Stating that they would not tolerate the behaviour of Mamlatdar, Dalvi said the Ponda BJP unit would meet Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and request him to demand the resignation of Mamlatdar from government posts.
