Two major players Sadanand Naik and Raju Naik and a third councillor of whom the whole council is tight-lipped, have emerged as frontrunners.
Sources say that one of the former chairpersons has begun heavy lobbying to capture the Chair. However, the council has united to keep him away from the post.
Sadanand Naik told Herald that he has been in talks with the councillors and was confident of getting the number to win over the chairperson’s post. Nevertheless, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat would decide who would be the next chairperson, he said.
Meanwhile, former chairperson Arthur D’silva has come down heavily on the comments that are buzz on social media that the Margao Councillors are corrupt. Arthur said, “If the so called well wishers of Margao prove that any of the 20 councillors is involved in corruption or malpractices, I resign as a councillor.”
On Gonzaco Rebello’s illegal construction row, Arthur said that as a chairperson Gonzaco had to take responsibility, but as an individual it is sad to see that Gonzaco was helplessly singled out in a town full of illegalities.”
The DMA is yet to accept the resignation of the Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello. However,
undercurrents have begun on the succession of the seat issue.
