MARGAO: Raia Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) has initiated efforts to restore the Bacbhatt Lake wetland, aiming to preserve its ecological balance and attract migratory birds. With an increasing number of visitors, including nature lovers and students, the committee recognised the need for conservation.
BMC Chairman Xavier Fernandes revealed that the restoration plan includes the development of Bacbhatt Lake’s bundh, safeguarding the area’s flora, fauna, and overall ecology.

After completing the de-silting process, the BMC is now focused on proposals to enhance bird-watching activities and promote the wetland as a tourist attraction. The Bacbhatt Lake is home to species like the grey heron, little cormorant, wire-tailed swallow, and lesser whistling duck, among others.
Expressing dedication to protecting the wetland, Xavier Fernandes stated, “We aim to establish Bacbhatt Lake as a premier destination for tourists, Goans, and students to witness the captivating migratory birds.”
The BMC has presented proposals to Environment Minister Nilesh Cabral, seeking support to expedite pending work at the site. Manuel Rodrigues, a BMC member and panch of Raia panchayat, confirmed the completion of the lake’s desilting process. He added, “With ample space available, Bacbhatt Lake can accommodate a larger number of migratory birds. The regular visits of students and other observers bring pride to Raia.”
Local leader Anthony Fernandes stressed the importance of raising awareness about wetland conservation in Raia and neighbouring villages. He emphasised the crucial role wetlands play in protecting flora, fauna, and serving as a habitat for migratory birds.
