MARGAO: Principal District and Session Judge South Goa Irshad Agha on Friday convicted former sarpanch of Raia Esmeralda Fernandes e Gomes for committing an offence under Section 3 (1) of Scheduled Caste and the Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
According to Maina-Curtorim police, they had registered an offence against former sarpanch of Village Panchayat Raia. The public prosecutor V G Costa appeared on behalf of the State. The complaint was lodged by one Anthony Barbosa against Esmeralda Fernandes e Gomes.
According to the First Information Report lodged at Maina Curtorim Police Station, the accused who is not a member of any Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes community abused the complainant with filthy language and also on his caste by calling him “tumi gaudi” in the presence of panchayat members and public during a meeting of Village Development Committee thereby intentionally insulting and humiliating the complainant.
The matter is posted for point of sentence on November 22.
