MARGAO: Maina Curtorim Police have booked a case against Raia Sarpanch Esmeraldo Gomes following a complaint from Anthony Barbosa that the sarpanch abused and insulted him because of his caste.
In his complaint, Anthony stated that at the Village Development Committee meeting held on Saturday at 10.30 in the morning, he along with another person named Custodio asked the sarpanch why the ward representative who belongs to the ST caste was not present for the meeting.
At that, he said, the sarpanch abused him and, citing his caste, asked him to eat s***t in Konkani which term, he said, was not only insulting and degrading but also against the law. Anthony named three witnesses to the incident including Custodio and a former sarpanch.
Police have registered a case under Section 3(1)(X) of the Scheduled Caste Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
