MARGAO: With the killer Arlem-Raia road continues to claim lives of pedestrians and motorists along the four-lane stretch, the youth of Raia hit the streets to set a 15-day deadline on the authorities to repair the road or face the wrath of the people.
Armed with placards protesting over the pathetic condition of the road, the youngsters said though the road has claimed many a life, the authorities have treated the matter in a casual manner, thus endangering the lives of the pedestrians and motorists.
Velissa Goes said though the local residents had raised eyebrow on the JICA project, the project is now responsible for turning the Arlem-Raia stretch of the four-lane road into a killer road. “Leave alone the accidents, the pathetic condition of the road has exposed the local residents to dust pollution. “There’s no proper illumination of the road and the construction material is dumped along the road, posing danger to the motorists and pedestrians”, she said, while setting a 15 day deadline on the authorities to restore the road to its original condition.
Agitated youth also questioned the road repair works being carried out by the authorities along the stretch. “We have often seen that tar put on the road is washed out within a day or two. This shows that the work is of substandard quality”, another youngster said, while demanding hot mixing of the entire road.
