MARGAO: Emphasizing that the Railway Police Force (RPF) is taking regular action against the transport of illicit liquor on trains in Goa, Konkan Railway Corporation (KRC) stated that the RPF has seized 2735 bottles of liquor worth Rs 1,40,000 and made 23 arrests since January this year.
KRC said that at the Margao railway station itself, 973 bottles of liquor worth Rs 71,500 were seized this year. Seventeen bootleggers have been arrested by RPF and they have been convicted by the courts.
“Transportation of illicit liquor in trains is a problem faced by Konkan Railway over a period of time. Availability of cheaper liquor in Goa as compared to neighbouring states like Maharashtra and Karnataka is the cause of illicit transportation of liquor from Goa to other states. Tourists visiting Goa in search of cheap liquor also compound this problem,” said Baban Ghatge, deputy general manager of KRC, Margao.
“RPF is taking regular action against illicit transportation of liquor in trains over Konkan Railway. This year alone, 2735 bottles of liquor worth Rs 1,40,000 have been seized by RPF. In this connection 23 bootleggers have also been arrested and convicted in courts,” added Ghatge.
