CURCHOREM: The Railway Supervisor of South Central Railways (SCR) Namdev inspected the rail over bridge at Curchorem connecting Morailem and Khamamoll on Saturday.
The inspection was conducted after Herald highlighted the dilapidated condition of the bridge in its Saturday edition.
After inspecting the bridge, Namdev told Herald that the maintenance work of this bridge is looked upon by SCR Belgaum office and they did their last inspection in 2016. “I will speak to my higher officer and find out whether our Vasco office has to repair/maintain the entire bridge or the Belgaum office and accordingly after submitting the report to Hubli office, tenders will be floated to carry out the necessary work,” Namdev said.
On Friday, Curchorem Block of Congress party members led by its Vice President Felix Fernandes called on Assistant Engineer of PWD (roads) at Quepem Digamber Kulkarni and submitted a letter to him urging him to carry out the inspection of the bridge and carry out repairs as it is in dilapidated condition.
When contacted, Kulkarni informed that since the entire bridge is in the railway property, they have to maintain it and that he has already written to them. “We already had informed the railway authorities and we will write to them again,” Kulkarni said.
When contacted, the Senior Section Works Department Junior Engineer Elisha, who was in Chennai attending a training, assured to send his officer to inspect the bridge. “We will do the necessary thing after receiving the report,” Elisha said.
It may be recalled that Herald had highlighted the pathetic condition of this bridge after collapsing the footbridge connecting Curchorem to Sanvordem over River Zuari (Around 200 meters away from this railway bridge) where one person died on the spot and many were saved by fire brigade personnel and locals.
