MARGAO: The row over erection of religious structure in the SGPDA market by vendors figured at the Tuesday meeting of the Authority, but members have decided to leave the matter to the District Collector to take a call.
Commenting on the religious structure, SGPDA member Vijai Sardessai said that as per the Supreme Court order, the District Collector has been appointed to take cognisance of religious structures on public place. “Since the District Collector has already taken cognisance of the structure, we have decided to allow the Collector to take a final decision on it,” Vijai said. “Though the structure is a place for worship for all the three communities, decision on the structure will be taken by the Collector as per the recent Supreme Court order,” he added.
Member Secretary Vinod Kumar said the SGPDA will write to the District Collector on the erection of the religious structure near PDA parking lot.
Kumar had on Friday last pasted notices on the retail market calling for the removal of the religious structure, but the notices were removed by agitated vendors, who have threatened to protect the structure at all costs.
