MARGAO: There have been an increasing number of complaints amongst residents of Margao about rent-a-cab vehicles being parked for days continuously on the roadsides of many places in the town, thereby blocking parking space for regular commuters, local residents.
From the lanes in front of Hari Mandir Margao to the area near Multipurpose school in Borda, locals have questioned why the authorities are not checking as to how these vehicles are being allowed.
The issue was also raised in the Assembly by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai with the government assuring to take action to curb this menace in Goa.
Margao Municipal Councillor (MMC) councillor from Mahesh Amonkar lamented that now the rent-a-bike operators are directly parking their vehicles in the municipal property itself, which indicated that authorities gave a damn to violations.
Amonkar also questioned what the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) and RTO have been doing as the violations are is happening under their jurisdiction.
It may be recalled that this issue had been discussed in detail at a meeting that was recently held in the chambers of MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar which had the participation of senior officials from the RTO, Margao Traffic Cell and Margao Police station too.
Both the presidents of the two municipal markets in Margao were also present and demanded that prime parking space around the markets and the municipal building should be kept from the rent-a-bikes
and rent-a-cars to
address the daily traffic congestion issues.
Transport Department officer Jimmy Rebello had said that they would conduct a survey to see in which areas such vehicles are being parked in the town. He added that the licence conditions mandate the owners of rent-a-bikes and rent-a-cars to park their vehicles at the place of their residence or office.
The Chairperson stated that the MMC would act after the RTO officials submit the survey report.
“We are not against anyone making a livelihood through this business but we have received complaints from the public and councillor Mahesh Amonkar demanding action,” Shirodkar added.
MMC Councillor Camilo Barretto had also raised this issue recently.
