Rental bikes parked around MMC building pose major hardships to people

These rent-a-bikes are occupying the public parking space for long hours; MMC is yet to crack down on the offenders

MARGAO: While on one hand the rental bikes parked in and around the Margao Municipal building pose major hardships to commuters by occupying parking space, the authorities on the other hand are yet to act on this issue.

It has been observed that the owners of these rent-a-bikes are occupying the public parking space causing difficulties to the

public, who enter the city for shopping and other important works.

Taking serious note of the civic body’s failure to act on these bike owners, local councillor Mahesh Amonkar has once again raised his voice and demanded strict action at the earliest.

Besides councillors, even locals have been complaining about the parking space being utilised by many rental bike and car owners for a very long period of time, depriving others of this space.

It may be recalled that at the recently held ordinary meetings of the civic body, councillor Amonkar had

demanded action from the Municipality, besides the Margao traffic cell. However, no action has been initiated till date.

“A memorandum in this regard has been submitted to the traffic cell, but no action has been taken yet. We have witnessed that several rent-a-bike are being parked for a very long period of time, resulting in hardships to the general public,” Amonkar said.

He further said that hundreds of people are entering the city for their work. However, they face hardships in search of a parking place. Police are taking action if vehicles parked in the ‘no parking’ zone, but authorities fail to understand that it is the shortage of space which forces them to park at the available space.

It is pertinent to note that last year, the same issue had been raised in the council meeting by some of the councillors, upon which then Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes had ordered an internal inquiry, but no concrete action was seen.

Police officials have already requested the civic body to provide them with the space, which will help them in initiating the action against these rent-a-bikes parked for long hours.
