PANJIM: Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has directed the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) and the Director of Panchayats (DoP) to file a status report pertaining to the development of burial grounds and crematorium within the next two months.
Hearing the application filed by Dr Anthony Rodrigues regarding the violation of a dead person’s rights due to lack of burial and cremation grounds, ADMA Shirodkar stated before GHRC that the State government will be moved to acquire land for burial grounds and crematorium wherever there is need.
The commission on December 16, 2016, had issued summons to the Chief Officer of Pernem Municipal Council (PMC) to remain present in person before the commission. Accordingly the commission directed the Pernem Municipal Officer Gautami Pednekar to initiate the process to identify the place for burial ground and crematorium.
The Commission also directed the DMA, the DoP and other respondents Margao Municipal Council, Pernem Municipal Council, Bicholim Municipal Council and Quepem Municipal Council and all other municipal councils and all panchayats through their Block Development Officers, to expedite the process of developing burial grounds and crematorium and submit status report to the commission within two months.
