PANJIM: Rash and
negligent driving continues to be the principal root for road accidents and
deaths in the State of Goa but the same has increased slightly corresponding to
the same period a year back.
The Goa
Traffic Police statistics shows a slight increase in cases booked for rash and
negligent as the traffic authorities registered 5634 such cases in the year
2016 as compared to 5337 cases for the same period in 2015 indicating a slight
increase in such cases.

However, Goa
has registered 4304 accidents in 2016 as compared to 4338 accidents for the
same period in the year 2015 indicating a marginal decline in the total number
of cases. In this 2 year period, there were 618 fatal accidents, 446 accidents
with grievous injuries (fractures and head injuries) and 5,329 non-injury
accidents.
Speaking to
Herald, Goacan coordinator said “Rash and negligent driving has been a
consistent problem in Goa. As far as the statistics go they fluctuate every
year. People who get licenses have no comprehensive training and roads are not
so much emphasized upon and recently we can see young youth who overtake from
the left side without helmets which is major concern and there is a high risk factor
involved, unless this changes such type of cases will be on the rise”
“Another
thing is that speed is a major concern as youth drive bikes in full speed
without the use of helmets and with these majority accidents occur and recently
we can also see that hit and run cases have also increased and with such
increasing cases the authorities need act up” said Martins
Similarly
other offences registered were for dangerous parking on public roads (64,842),
no entry (28,022), driving without seat belt (51,029), tinted glasses (26,488),
over-speeding (4,608), overtaking (5,730), driving without proper lights
(4,066), lane cutting (2,003), using mobile phone while driving (2,919), rash
and negligent driving (10,971) and under influence of alcohol while driving
(6,023).
Another
major issue is driving in no entry area of which the Goa traffic cell has
booked and issued 28,022 challans for the year 2015 and 2016 and similarly it
was also revealed that driving without helmets has also witnessed a decrease
from 17, 1191 in 2015 to 15, 7406 in 2016.
Sources have
also said that majority of the accidents which have taken place in the State
were on two wheelers signifying that majority of the victims were young age.
Meanwhile,
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Dharmesh Angle said “Majority of the road
accidents which take place in Goa is because of rash and negligent driving, we
can say about 90 percent are such type cases and these cases can only be
tackled through enforcement”
