PANJIM: The digging of roads at various places in Panjim under the Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd project and other projects has been causing serious inconvenience to the residents.
Raising concerns over the safety, a middle aged woman said, “The roads are not safe anymore because of the increasing number of vehicles on road and the continuous digging. Once the roads are dug, their responsibility is finished and no one bothers about their restoration. We have even seen people falling into these ditches. Even if they take up restoration of roads, they will leave it incomplete. No one actually maintains the roads.”
Joseph Varghese, a 70-year-old retired professor of Government Polytechnic in Panjim, complained that due to the digging by various agencies for various reasons, senior citizens are at the receiving end. “They have been digging for a while now, and they have completely ruined the telephone lines. Everything is done in a shabby way and now people are fed up with this. It is such a horrible thing for old people like me who cannot see properly; they dig it and then just leave it, I have even fallen into one ditch.”
A college student, Kenneth Alvares opined, “Rather than doing it multiple times, it will be better if the authorities take up the work and get it done once and for all, at least then the public would not be troubled over and over again.”
Even the motorists are facing trouble with Naseer Shaikh, a taxi driver saying that vehicles are prone to damage. He said road digging causes damage to the vehicles and increases travel time due to which diesel also gets wasted.
