MARGAO: Town and Country Planning Minister Vijai Sardessai unveiled the plaque naming a road after former Margao Municipal Council Chairperson Monica Dias on Sunday — being her birth anniversary.
A formal function was held in the presence of Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai, Vice Chairperson Tito Cardoso and several prominent persons from Margao.
Recalling the great works Monica did particularly for women, he said she was especially concerned about the downtrodden and was very active in road safety and said his Goa Forward Party would continue the good work she had done.
He said through the Town and Country Planning Department he would intervene positively to help NGOs and social activists interested in making Goan roads safer for not only commuters but also for pedestrians.
He said Monica was remembered for her honesty and dedication and was a selfless politician which is a very rare quality in politics. He recalled how Monica gave up important positions she held in the Congress Party over a matter of principles.
The road leading to Joavel Pinto Bar and Restaurant to Sunaina hotel is named after Monica Dias and is named Monica Noronha Dias Road with a caption “No legacy is so rich as honesty” summarizing Monica’s character.
Some of the prominent people present for the function were former MMC chairpersons Valmiki Faleiro and Elinio Colaco, former minister Luis Alex Cardoso and councilors from Fatorda area while Fr Manual Fernandes blessed the plaque.
