Roads leading to Colva in bad condition, locals demand repairs before monsoon

MARGAO: As the monsoon is approaching, the condition of roads leading to iconic Colva Beach continue to be in a bad state, and locals fear that it will result in major hardship to the people in the rainy season, if not repaired immediately.

As alleged by the locals, the roads have worsened further due to laying of the sewerage pipeline.

The people, motorists and more importantly the tourists have been victims of these bad roads since 2021 since the road is riddled with a lot of potholes.

Speaking to media persons, the locals claimed that the condition of the roads has become dusty with mud all over the stretch, causing inconvenience to the commuters and tourists.

It is pertinent to note that the Public Works Department had dug the roads for laying sewerage network pipeline, but the road is still not restored to its original state. The villagers, besides the Colva Village Panchayat had urged hot-mixing of the roads. However, the conditions of the roads continue to be the same. There have been minor repair works carried out but the roads need is a complete overhaul, say the locals.

Mud and rubbles can be noticed at many places on the roads leading to the iconic beach, which is heavily crowded these days of summer, but the condition of the roads have created major hardship for all.

Raymond Pereira, a local, said the road leading to the iconic beach of Colva has become a hot spot for accidents due to the bad condition of roads.

“Locals and the tourists are struggling a lot due to the un-restored roads for over one year. The roads, dug for the chambers of sewage pipeline, are still not restored. Rubbles and mud all over has made life difficult for many travelling on the roads,” Pereira said.

He further said that the bad condition of the road has aggravated the risk to heart patients and also to pregnant women.

“We are witnessing several incidents on these roads at Colva, which go unreported. Commuters are complaining about the damage to their vehicles,” said Pereira.

Anamica Naik, a local lady, said that they have constantly asked for this road to be hot-mixed for once and all.

“Now, it is our request to the local MLA to look into the matter and restore the road conditions before the monsoon. The conditions over here will be worsened, if the repair work is not carried out at the earliest,” Naik said.
