No one was however, injured in the incident which occurred this evening when strong winds hit the city. While three fast food handcarts at the old bus stand were damaged, a branch came down on the pavement around the municipal garden.
Popular High school bore the brunt of the winds when the roof top were blown over by the strong winds. The structure housing the computer lab, staff room and office were affected. School officials said the computer lab has sustained damaged with rain water entering the premises.
Incidentally, the incident occurred in the midst of a meeting the management headed by Chairman Avdhut Parrikar had with the teachers and staff. Parrikar said the minute long incident left the roof damaged. “It all happened within a minute. When we came out of the meeting, we saw the roof the school building totally damaged. We are in the process of ascertaining the loses”, he said.
The school management immediately swung into action by procuring tarpaulin sheets and carpenters to cover the exposed portion of the building with the help of fire brigade personnel.
The adjoining Loyola high school building located behind the Popular high school also suffered damaged as roof titles could be see blown over by the strong winds.
Margao fire brigade said that the fire brigade received a call from Fr Simon at around 7.11 pm stating that the building roof has been damaged by the winds.
