MARGAO: The destruction of sand dunes in Varca led to heated discussions with gram sabha members demanding that those behind the criminal activity be taken to task.
A group of villagers led by Warren Alemao took on the panchayat body for not filing any complaints on the destruction of sand dunes, despite the issue being serious in nature.
It is pertinent to note that a few days before an incident was reported at Varca wherein sand dunes were badly damaged by the unknown miscreants and were later restored by the initiative of the local MLA Venzy Viegas and the panchayat body.
Alemao questioned the Sarpanch Salesiana Fernandes for not filing complaints with the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority, Coastal Regulation Zone and police.
He demanded that a resolution be passed and to file a complaint against the culprits.
Villagers also demanded a survey of the sand dunes existing in the jurisdiction of the Varca panchayat.
Answering the queries, Sarpanch said that the flying squad has inspected the site and noted down the details.
“The flying squad should have first taken the initiative to file the complaint before the police, however, upon the demand from the villagers; the panchayat will file an official complaint against the culprit,” the sarpanch said.
