PANJIM: As pressure mounts on the Goa government over the proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) project at Melauli, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Tendulkar said that the government should look for an alternative site rather than imposing it on the people.
“We (BJP Goa unit) will be talking to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on the issue. We also need to find whether people are genuinely against the setting up of IIT in their village. The government can consider looking for an alternative site for the project,” Tendulkar said.

The MP, who has also served as BJP’s State president for two terms, expressed confidence that the government will not take any decision which will harm the people.
He further suggested shifting the project to the Farmagudi campus where the IIT is temporarily running alongside the Goa Engineer College building. “But I feel that the issue will be resolved provided a proper committee, as recommended by CM, is constituted.”
During his visit to the village two days ago, Sawant had assured that the government will form a committee of 15 people who will discuss the project with him and all issues raised by locals over the project would be addressed. The CM had also told the protesting villagers that they are ready to rehabilitate those who would be affected by the project and also regularise the land titles, which has been pending for long.
