VASCO: The prison authorities in Goa have decided to shift all inmates of the dilapidated Sada Sub Jail, Mormugao to the Central Jail at Colvale by January 20.
The first lot of 49 male under trials were shifted on Monday following a decision to handover the possession of the dilapidated Sub Jail building to the PWD for repairs. According to Additional Inspector General of Prisons, Siddhivinayak Naik, the decision to shift all inmates of Sada Sub jail to Colvale Central Jail was taken a few weeks ago. He said that during his last visit to the sub jail, he noticed that the building is in dilapidated state with sewage chambers on the ground floor overflowing.
“As the jail premises were in a dilapidated state, we decided to shift the inmates to Colvale Central Jail in batches so that PWD could take up extensive maintenance work,” Naik said.
“Though we wanted to shift all inmates at one go, however, as the new block could not be completed in toto, we decided to shift 60 out of total 98 inmates. However as 11 undertrials were already released on bail, 49 inmates were shifted to Colvale on Monday under heavy police posse and by January 20 all other inmates including female inmates will be shifted to Colvale Jail,” he added.
When asked whether the bakery inside the jail and other courses for the inmates would remain functional till January 20, he said, “Bakery has already stopped its operations last week. Similarly other vocational courses have been stopped in view of shifting of inmates,” he informed.
