VASCO: The Sancoale gram sabha on Sunday resolved to ban the use of plastics in village and to find an alternate to plastic bags.
After the gram sabha, Deputy Sarpanch Kavita Kamal informed the media that most of the garbage is dumped by the outsiders who come on bike with their household garbage. “Even panchayat has witnessed such instances and has warned people,” she said.
Kamal further said that the cleanliness initiative should come from people. “I hope that the garbage issues will be resolved soon after a dedicated site is made available,” she said and urged locals from Sancoale to keep their village clean as they would keep their own house clean.
Panchayat Secretary Krishna Gawde said that the gram sabha was called after a notification from the Director of Panchayat directed the panchayat to convene an extraordinary gram sabha to discuss the issue of plastic ban and garbage disposal.
Gawade said that the panchayat would create an awareness drive to educate all shops and business establishments asking them to use paper bags and later huge fines would be imposed if plastic is seen littered and used in panchayat jurisdiction.
Gawade said that Sancoale panchayat does not have a dedicated dumping site therefore they have to depend on a contractor who would collect garbage door to door and later dump it elsewhere. Gawade said that once a dedicated site is made available to Sancoale Panchayat, the entire garbage would be collected and disposed.
Panchayat members also decided to make announcements of plastic ban in the Sancoale area.
To solve the issue of plastic bags, the villagers suggested that panchayat should provide free clothe bag and paper bags initially and later people could buy them on their own.
