PONDA: A sand-laden truck proceeding from Savoiverem to Ponda overturned on Sunday morning after its driver 54-year-old Benny de Sa from Margao lost control over vehicle at sharp turn on steep slope at Apewal-Priol.

The locals rushed to the spot and shifted the injured driver to GMC. Traffic was disrupted for four hours as entire road was blocked after the truck overturned.

The sand that got spilled on road was cleared by the labourers.  Ponda Police registered an offence against the driver under Section 279 for rash and negligent driving and Section 379 for theft of sand from open space, and Section 21 of the Mines and Mineral Development and Regulation Act.

The locals complained that the sharp turn on the steep slope has caused several accidents.

The locals including former sarpanch Mangaldas Gaude demanded that local MLA and Minister Govind Gaude make efforts to get the two dangerous sharp turns at Apewal rectified.
