SANGUEM: Most Sanguem councillors strongly objected the construction of the Children’s Park in front of the Miracles Church, Sanguem.
They raised their objections after the Sanguem municipality’s special meeting which was held to decide on the construction of the children’s park in place of the dilapidated one in front of the Church.
It is pertinent to note here that it’s been decades that the children’s park has been neglected. The playthings were dismantled long time back and except for a few rusted poles.
When the issue came up for discussion, most councillors led by Romualdo Fernandes and Queiroz Cruz vehemently opposed the construction of the children’s park in the area.
The area being adjacent to the road and open on all sides, Fernandes and Cruz highlighted the issue of safety of the children visiting the Church and those studying at the pre-primary school.
Fernandes claimed that migrant labourers frequent the area and there is every possibility of rape and molestation incidents in future, if the council goes ahead with the construction of the children’s park at the existing place.
However, Fernandes suggested that the council to shift the children’s park to an open space near the police quarters.
“It would be apt to shift the children’s park at the much spacious open place owned by the municipality near the Police Quarters, which is vacant,” he said.
When Chief Officer Pramod Desai decided to put the issue for voting, only Chairperson Suryadatt Naik and Councillor Sanjay Raikar voted in favour of the move to construct the children’s park at the existing place.
Meanwhile, many Sanguem locals too have expressed their reservations on the construction of the Children’s park at the existing place.
