MARGAO: A portion of the Sanvorcotto bridge at Cuncolim gave way when the contractor was in the process of dismantling the old bridge to make way for the new one.
A heavy earth moving machinery was seen hanging precariously on the bridge after a portion of the bridge landed in the water. Fortunately, there were casualties or injuries to the workers and the dismantling of the old bridge continued as planned.
Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik, who rushed to the spot upon hearing the news, said the collapse of the portion of the bridge proves that the bridge was very weak. He said the bridge will be put in place within 90 days.
“The contractor was scheduled to dismantle the bridge and had mobilised the machinery to carry out the operation when half the portion came down. The dismantling work will go on as planned,” Rajan said.
He pointed out that the over Rs four crore bridge will be completed before the ensuing monsoons, adding that the contractor has already put in place a road diversion over the rivulet.
Meanwhile, the Cuncolim Civic and Consumer Forum (CCCF) in a letter to the Chairperson and Chief Officer of the Cuncolim Municipal Council has expressed concern about procedures not being in place although the demolition of the old existing bridge has begun after the construction of the temporary bypass at Sanvorcotto in Cuncolim.
