MARGAO: The controversial Sanvorcotto Bridge at Cuncolim has been finally re-tendered by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) at an estimated amount of Rs 4.68 crore.
Cuncolim MLA Rajan Naik said that work on the bridge will commence soon after completing the necessary formalities so that the work is complete in all respects before the monsoons.
The bridge had hit the headlines after unprecedented inundation of low lying areas of Sanvorcotto during the last monsoon after locals attributed the flooding to a temporary road bypass built by the GSIDC contractor on the rivulet.
The road bypass (piped culvert) was erected by the contractor as an alternative for road traffic after the demolition of the Sanvorcotto Bridge.
Work on the bridge, however, could not start on time before the monsoon, leaving the temporary culvert in the rivulet, causing large scale flooding of the low lying areas of Sanvorcotto.
Interestingly, the District Magistrate, South had declared the Sanvorcotto Bridge weak, restricting the movement of vehicles on the bridge.
