Sao Jose De Areal residents urge VP to hold gram sabha

MARGAO: Residents of Sao Jose De Areal on Tuesday urged the village panchayat to hold an extraordinary gram sabha with regard to the construction license issued to land developers in the village.

In a letter to sarpanch, villagers have stated that the issue pertaining to the construction license to one of the builders needs to be discussed.

“This is a very grave issue that threatens the very existence of our village, the Goa panchayat Raj Act, 1994 and the constitutional provisions that gave birth to the panchayat raj in accordance with the preamble of our constitution”, stated the letter.

Further it has been mentioned that the panchayat is duty bound by the Goa Panchayat Raj Act.

It must be recalled that recently nearly 50 villagers had gheraoed the sarpanch of Sao Jose De Areal Village Panchayat over the issue and demanded to revoke all the licenses given to the land developer till the matter is studied properly. And the sarpanch had assured the villagers to revoke the licenses after the meeting of the executive body.

However, the villagers have demanded to hold an extraordinary gram sabha so that the matter is discussed.
