They claimed that the process proved hazardous to the local residents as fumes and thick smoke billowed from the unit, posing a health hazard to the local population.
Sarpanch Julio Monteiro, local Panch member Minguel Gomes along with locals Freddy Travasso and Peter Viegas assembled at the scrap yard demanding its immediate closure. They called upon the police on the control room, but lamented that the police were hesitant to conduct a detailed panchanama of the activity and seizure of the aluminium bars.
The sarpanch told the media that the recent survey conducted by the Sao Jose de Areal village has unearthed the existence of 38 scrap yards in the village. He has sought cooperation from the government agencies to shut down the illegal yards in the village.
Peter Viegas demanded that the Maina Curtorim police conduct a detailed panchanama of the aluminium bricks manufactured by the scrap yard. “We do not know what is being manufactured in these scrap yards. They have been operating against the wishes of the villages”, he added.
