Sarzora okays revising house tax

MARGAO: The Sarzora gram sabha on Sunday agreed to a house tax revision to increase the revenue of the panchayat besides also deciding to have a tree plantation drive in the village concentrating on the roads leading to the schools,
Chaired by Sarpanch Sabita Mascarenhas, the gram sabha agreed to fix the minimum house tax at Rs 100 per house and asked the panchayat body to decide upon the taxation structure at their monthly meeting.
The gram sabha also decided to undertake a tree plantation drive concentrating on plants trees by the roadside specially focusing the roads leading to the convent school in the village and also in the open spaces that are available.
In order to bring about cleanliness in the village and to discourage people from dumping their garbage in the village, it was decided to fine people found dumping or burning garbage in the village.
It was also decided to issue notices to the landlords who have rented their premises but not registered with the panchayat and also to collect one month’s rent from the owners who have rented their premises.
The street light issue was quite hotly debated with villagers complaining that every time they complain about street lights to the electricity department’s Chinchinim office they are told that the street lights maintenance is outsources and that agency would come and attend to it while the department has nothing to do with it.
The villagers prevailed upon the panchayat to write to the power minister about this problem and get them some relief as soon as possible as it becomes difficult to move about in the village in the night when the street lights are not functioning.
