MARGAO: South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar has informed that he has sought the intervention of finance ministry in the matter of seafarers being brought under the Income Tax assessment after an Income Tax Tribunal in Kolkota passed an order which has made seafarers pay taxes.
Fear and anxiety prevailed amongst the seafarers of Goa and all around the country after the Income Tax Tribunal in Kolkota ruled in favour of assessing seafarers for income taxes followed by mass notices to the seamen in the country.
Sawaikar informed Herald that, “If required and if the Government is eligible to challenge this order, then we will seek a challenge this order after studying same. If it is a private dispute, then, we will have to see whether we can challenge or not.”
The MP said that the Income Tax Department may have issued notices following the order passed by the Income Tax Tribunal.
“I will have a meeting with the Finance Minister on Monday or Tuesday and I will speak to him and seek his intervention into the matter,” Sawaikar said.
Favouring the seafarers Sawaikar said, “They definitely have to be out of the IT ambit as the hardship they face in sea and the benefit they get after working for so long is too less comparatively and hence they have to be protected.”
