‘Scenic Mormugao Fort will be transformed into prime tourist attraction’

VASCO: Highlighting the untapped potential of Mormugao Fort, Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar underscored the need to convert the historical site into a bustling tourist destination. Speaking during the  Independence Day celebrations at the fort, Amonkar disclosed his vision for the historic monument which is presently in a rundown condition.

The sprawling 17th century monument located at the mouth of the Zuari river overlooks the Mormugao Port, and was built to defend the harbour. While the fountains of its glory days are long gone, the fortress still houses a chapel.

“The Mormugao Fort holds a special place in my heart, and I have earnestly engaged with the government to plan its renovation and restoration. The credit for commemorating Independence Day at this historic fort goes to Mormugao Police Inspector Alvito Rodrigues and his dedicated team,” Amonkar asserted.

“This fort should be developed as a tourist attraction and various domestic and international tourists arriving at the port on cruise boats can visit for its scenic views. We have already had a discussion with the CM Pramod Sawant, who called for a meeting of all the Port officials including the Chairman, along with Archaeology Minister Shubash Phal dessai,” he said. While the port authority remains sceptical about the move owing to security concerns, the CM has strongly advocated for a separate entrance gate for tourists.

“Our next phase involves comprehensive deliberations and site inspections with CM Sawant, the Archaeology Minister and South Goa Collector to determine the best location for a gate that will provide visitors with unrestricted access to the fort,” added the MLA.

He further outlined his plans, stating, “A complete renovation and maintenance initiative is in the pipeline, to celebrate our storied heritage and to showcase it to both locals and visitors.”
