MARGAO: The villagers of Sao Jose de Areal were happy to see that the recently renovated Portuguese-era culvert was one of the chosen spots for the students as part of activity to mark National Science Day, celebrated every year on February 28.
On Sunday, several students of Bethany Convent High School gathered at the site of the renovated historical culvert for a drawing activity in view of the upcoming National Science Day. Interestingly, students too appealed to the people to keep this place clean and beautiful.
‘Science and Nature’ was the topic for drawing given to the students.
It may be recalled that displaying utter dedication and love for their village, a group of locals from Sao Jose de Areal headed by social activist Freddy Travaso had succeeded in their restoration efforts and have contributed to a good cause by renovating one of the heritage sites in the village – a Portuguese–era culvert, which was in bad shape.
The renovation was undertaken by the villagers after the government authorities failed to restore the old culvert, which was in a dilapidated condition.
Speaking to reporters, Carmo Rodrigues, a drawing teacher who brought the students at the site, said that this being a historical site, the school thought of
bringing the students over here as a part of Science Day celebrations.
“This is a Portuguese era-bridge and has been renovated by the villagers. The site looks really beautiful now,” Rodrigues said.
