Farmers of Chandrawado, Fatorda were aghast to find some powder along with oil from a scrapyard flowing into their fields along with the rainwater through gutters. This has badly affected their fields and health and the farmers have demanded that authorities investigate the matter.
Some people noticed that a huge, gas cylinder-shaped metal container was recently brought at the scrapyard in the area and powder from it, mixed with rainwater and flowed from the gutters in the fields nearby.
Farmers working in the field also complained of itching feet, when they came in contact with the liquid mixed in rainwater.
Irate women working in the fields were heard shouting that their fields and livelihood would be destroyed due to this negligent behaviour of the scrapyard owners.
Local Councillor Terrence Barbosa acknowledged that farmers were facing a problem due to the irresponsible functioning of the scrap yard.
Former Councillor Camillo, while recalling that there was a fire in one of the scrapyards recently, lamented that nobody has till date acted upon their demand to shift all scrapyards to an industrial estate, as they are causing nuisance to the people living there.
The existence of the scrapyards also takes a lot of toll on the traffic and it is very difficult at times to drive in the area, as huge trucks are parked haphazardly on the side of the road, he said.
