PANJIM: Urging the media to maintain credibility and stressing on importance of journalism of principles, ethics and integrity, Editor in Chief of Goa Today, Vinayak Naik in his keynote address stressed that the media has to self regulate in the larger interest of the people.
He was speaking at the National Press Day function organized by the Department of Information & Publicity, Government of Goa in association with Goa Editors Guild, Goa Union of Journalists, Photo Journalist Association Goa, Electronic Media Journalists Association and Sports Journalists Association.
The chief guest, Secretary for information & Publicity, Pawan Kumar Sain in his speech stressed that the responsibility of the press today has increased manifold to safeguard interest of the people, state and nation as a whole.
“The purpose of the media is to serve the people with news, views, comments and information on matters of public interest in fair accurate, unbiased and decent manner,” he said adding that while doing so the media needs to perform the role of a teacher and guide adhering to the principles of ethics and integrity.
Sain also that media has to exercise its freedom with responsibility and be amenable to self monitoring since it is the fourth pillar of democracy and has to play a vital role in serving social interest. Five senior journalists ~Darshan Lolyenkar, Prakash Kurdikar, Vaman Prabhu, Joaquim Gracias and Navso alias Babu Pingulkar were felicitated.
The programme was followed by a panel discussion on the topic “Role of media in serving public interest’’ which was moderated by Julio D’Silva.
Editor Gomantak Shriram Pachindre, Editor Goa Doot Sachin Parab, Editor Prudent Media Pramod Acharya, President Photo Journalists Association Goa Kailas Naik participated in the panel discussion along with Prakash Kamat, Suhasini Prabhugaonkar, Soiru Velip and others.
