MARGAO: There is no threat to Konkani journalism in present times was the unanimous conclusion at the panel discussion held at Ravindra Bhavan, on Friday.
The panellists advised that the promoters of Konkani journalism need to focus on marketing and improving the circulation which will keep Konkani journalism thriving.
Participants in the panel discussion were also unanimous that there was a slot waiting to be filled up for Konkani publication and were also opinion that a newspaper in Roman as well as Devnagiri script would survive in Goa.
Hrishikesh Kadam, the moderator, threw open the discussion by asking why youngsters should go for Konkani journalism in present times when the only Konkani daily is facing closure. Goa Union of Journalists’ former president Prakash Kamat said young blood can bring new ideas and things would change if youngsters get into Konkani journalism.
Sandesh Prabhudessai who was once the editor of Konkani daily Sunaprant pointed out that in 2008 Sunaprant made profit and hence argued that it is a myth that Konkani journalism cannot survive. “We are making a mistake of thinking only publication or a daily is journalism when in present times there are so many other avenues,” he said.
