MARGAO: A separate department exclusively for the welfare of persons with disabilities would be formed, which will work for the betterment of Persons with Disabilities (PwD) by providing all necessary facilities to them, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said here on Friday.
CM Sawant’s announcement of the creation of a special department for Persons with Disabilities coincides with the celebration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Margao.
He also informed that the commencement of operations of the same is scheduled from April 1, 2024, beginning of the next financial year.
The programme was held by the Director of the Social Welfare Department, in association with the office of the State Commissioner for PwD and the Gujarati Samaj Educational Trust special school in Margao.
Addressing the gathering CM also said that a permanent hospital for persons with disabilities will be established, aiming to provide medical care and support to them.
“The establishment of a permanent hospital signifies a long-term commitment of addressing the healthcare disparities faced by persons with disabilities. This initiative demonstrates a commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities have access to specialised medical services that can enhance their overall well-being,” Sawant said.
Currently, the issues of PwD come under the purview of the Social Welfare Department. It remains to be seen who gets to become the minister of this new department once it is officially constituted and whether it is able to deliver the required services.
