MARGAO: Citizens and nature lovers of Sodovim-Verna were in for shock to discover that sewage and waste water was being released in the traditional lake for the last couple of days.
Villagers have now urged the authorities concerned including the Verna panchayat to initiate action and stop discharging of sewage into the lake.
In a complaint lodged to authorities, the villagers stated that “It was very painful to see that sewage water was being discharged in the lake situated at Sodovim, Verna. This will not only cause major damage to the biodiversity but result in major health issues as well.”
They also stated that it would also affect the nearby spring and pollute the water source thereby posing a threat to human life.
“As nature lovers and local residents, we request action against the culprits involved in discharging sewage water into the lake,” said the villagers in their complaint.
It has been noticed that the unknown persons had laid down pipes in order to release the sewage and waste water into the lake, which is one of the traditional natural water resources in the vicinity of Verna.
However, Verna Sarpanch Nazia Amita D’Costa, stated that she has not received any official complaint in this regard but the issue was brought to her notice by some of the villagers.
“ The panchayat will not tolerate such type of activities in the Verna and we will carry a site inspection along with the Health Centre will carry at the said location at the earliest and once the official complaint is received,” D’Costa assured.
