PANJIM: The area resembled a disaster zone. Drills mounted on JCB’s digging ditches. Desperate repair work on a broken down portion of the road leading to the Dona Paula jetty. But one thing has not changed. In fact it possibly has become worse. Amidst all the work, and the mess and the din, hordes and hordes of tourists were walking down the excuse of the road to the jetty. There were old ladies and young ones. Man and children getting down from tour busses as well as cars of all types with number plates that sported almost all the letters in the alphabet.
Wending their way through the broken road, the mud and the workers. Tourist of all hues and colours braving the rain and the noise, in their trademark shorts and t shirts – both men and women. But there were others in salwars and even dolled up. Even some in heels. But they were all marching purposefully with their cameras and their goggles and their hats – to glimpse the lady Paula and be enthralled by the legend as told by the guides or browse through the clothes stalls – all part of the Goan experience.
Many stopped at the eateries along the road. Others were visiting the wine stores while others were walking down to the beach.
