MAPUSA: Complaining that sex trade is being run in the municipal market, the Mapusa merchants have asked the local municipality to put an end to the same.

The complaint was made on Wednesday when a delegation of Mapusa Merchants Association met Municipal Chairman Ryan Braganza and presented their grievances pertaining to Mapusa market.

On the occasion, Association President Ashish Shirodkar complained that migrant women roam in the market offering sex service and soliciting customers. “Such activities are a nuisance in the market,” he complained.

The delegation claimed that such women solicit customers by standing next to some shops, which are then identified with such activities. Such identification tarnishes the image of the shop as well as the municipal market, the delegation claimed.

Further, the delegation urged the municipality to remove the gates installed at the entry points of the municipal market, which they said, is causing difficulties for senior citizens to enter and exit the market.

“The gates were installed to stop the people from taking their vehicles inside the market; however, instead of solving this issue, it has facilitated the migrant vendors to squat at the entrance,” the delegation said.

The delegation also complained that vehicles are parked haphazardly in the market; commercial vehicles are occupying parking space meant for the public; and that vendors in the market are squatting disorderly.

After conveying their grievances, the delegation urged the chairman to arrange a meeting of Councillors and the merchants to discuss and find solutions.

After hearing the grievances of the merchants, Chairman Braganza said, “The issue of sex trade in the municipal market will be followed up with the police. And as urged by the delegation, a meeting has been scheduled on March 19.”
