MARGAO:: The failure to remove chicken waste from the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA)-owned market in Margao for the past three days has led to a nuisance in the area, prompting chicken vendors to demand the urgent removal of the rotting waste to prevent health hazards.
A group of chicken vendors visited the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday to draw the Chief Officer’s attention to the unhygienic conditions at the market due to the accumulated chicken waste. Following their intervention, the MMC promptly removed the waste.
The problem stemmed from the agency appointed by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) to collect chicken waste, failing to carry out its duties for several days, citing a dispute with the previous contractor as the reason for the lapse.
Leo Barretto, a chicken vendor, explained their predicament, “ The agency has not picked up the chicken waste from the market for the last three days. The conditions are very unsanitary, and customers are avoiding our shops due to the intolerable stench,” he said, adding that even his employees are reluctant to come to work out of fear they may fall ill.
When contacted, Chief Officer of the MMC Gaurish Sankhwalkar assured that the agency responsible for waste collection will be instructed to act promptly. Sankhwalkar added, “I have also suggested resolving the dispute between the two agencies by approaching the GWMC.”
