CANACONA: Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) on Monday demolished a shack-cum-residence run by a Dutch national at Palolem beach.
CMC with the assistance of Canacona Magistrate and Mamlatdar and Canacona Police demolished the shack half lying on the Palolem River banks and the other half in the river, after serving a 15 days notice.
According to municipal sources, a foreign national, reportedly from the Netherlands, was operating the shack at Palolem for the last several years.
“After receiving a complaint from the land owner, the foreign national was issued a show-cause notice, which he failed to reply in time and accordingly the shack was demolished on Monday,” informed Chief Officer Pradeep Naik.
When the demolition team along with Canacona Mamlatdar and CMC chief officer reached the site, the foreign national provided stiff resistance which the demolition team thwarted with the help of police. As the demolition squad was on a clearing spree, it reportedly stumbled upon a number of narcotics material including syringes. All the anti-narcotics items are accordingly sealed, informed sources.
Unconfirmed sources informed that while the demolition squad after carrying out the task were returning, they were confronted by an advocate with a ‘stay order’.
However, the structure was already demolished and the family of the foreign national was seen going away from the area, while the foreign national was also reportedly heard arguing with the officials, claiming that his items had gone missing. Sources further informed that the foreign national had been operating and living in the area for the last several years and as the shack has been standing there since its erection for equal number of years.
Sources also alleged that the Dutch national had reportedly filed a complaint against the CMC chief officer that certain amount of foreign currency, including US dollars, went missing from his place after the inspection. The matter is reportedly to come up in court shortly.
