Shack owners file plea of intervention

The Shack Owners Association today filed intervention before Bombay High Court at Goa in the interim stay granted by the court for setting up shacks at Palolem. The intervention would be heard on Monday.
The Division Bench comprising Justice D G Karnik and Justice F M Reis earlier this month had asked the State government to keep on hold shack allotment at Palolem beach after it was brought to the notice of the court, through a petition filed by a local, that the shack owners were completely violating the norms.
Vikas Bhagat from Palolem, through public interest litigation (PIL) had brought to the notice of the court that there has been rampant violation of CRZ notification while erecting the shacks on beach.
“There is complete commercialization of beach. The shacks erected right in the sea water obstructing the free movement of the people,” it reads.
The State government had sought three weeks time to monitor the shack activities, which are in violation of law.
The petitioner has pointed out that despite being a small beach, Palolem has been occupied by more than eight shacks thus making it impossible for the common people to go to there.
“The locations of the shacks are such, that the ‘public beach’ has been completely converted into ‘private beach’ by shack owners,” it stated.
